Lydia J. Moll
Early Life
Lydia J. Moll was born in the spring of 1957. She was born into a low income family of 9 in the deep south City of New Orleans, Louisiana. Her family lived in a two room shack with an outhouse in the midst of the civil rights movement and generational poverty. Moll developed Poliomyelitis (polio) disease at the young age of five, which left both of her legs paralyzed. In an attempt to save Lydia from the contagion wards of Charity Hospital her mother made the decision to take care of her in their home. For most of her young life her mother carried her from room to room of their family shack. Slowly, by crawling on her hands and knees, clinging to objects of the home and her siblings supporting her weight, she taught herself to walk again by the age of 10. Although she survived the disease she would go on to be physically disabled for the rest of her life. At the tender age of 12 her mother died of breast cancer, Moll then took on the role of caring for her three younger siblings including herself. She suffered many ailments such as depression, loneliness, isolation and her physical impairment.
Education & Career
Moll attended an all black elementary school and went on to graduate from John Ehret High School in 1978 just 10 years after the civil rights movement. She went on to become a Certified Nursing Assistant at a local hospital. Lydia became a Respiratory therapist in 1997 where she continued to work until 2008. Within retirement Lydia found her love for writing using it as a therapeutic outlet for her pain and suffering. She also became a licensed minister and Ordained Pastor attending Temple of Prayer EODM (Evangelistic Outreach deliverance ministries). She also attended Delgado community College and Fellowship international bible college.
Home Life
Married in 1976 and later divorced in the year 2002, Lydia is still retired and disabled and has 2 children of her own along with 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Suffering from polio syndrome (PPS) she began to have late life medical problems such as asthma, severe arthritis, degenerative disk disease, and required surgical knee replacements. In 2009 in the midst of recovery, while hospitalized, Moll became unresponsive due to several critical life threatening blood clots. Lapsing into a code blue status, her sister Patryce was instructed to make her funeral arrangements . Lydia believes God gave her a miracle and another chance at life. Moll has since remarried and enjoys writing and gardening. She continues to write poetry, short stories and children’s books and is now a published author. Her dream is to be able to provide charitable donations to the less fortunate through her published works.
